NTNU MUSIC Alumni Association

Department of Music, National Taiwan Normal University was founded in 1946. Being the first music higher education institute in Taiwan, it was formerly called “Department of Music, Provincial Taiwan Teachers’ Collage” and based on a 3-year course system. In 1948, Department of Music with 5-year curriculum was founded. In 1955, the collage was upgraded and renamed “Provincial Taiwan Teachers’ University”, and Department of Music belonged to College of Literature. In 1967, the university was again renamed “National Taiwan Normal University”, or NTNU. During that time, the need for middle school music teachers was desperate, so the 3-year curriculum was held again in 1955, 1956 and 1957. In 1980, NTNU founded the first graduate institute of musicology in Taiwan to cultivate professional academic and art talents in the field of music.

During these decades, many alumni suggested forming the alumni association for Department of Music, NTNU. On January 29th, 1973, the Alumni Association was founded under the support of Chairman Ta-Cheng Chang. Wei-Liang Shih was nominated as president, Shun-Hsien Lin as vice president, and “Guidelines for Alumni Association” was also formulated, yet the association failed to work on a long-term basis due to various reasons.

During Chang-Hui Hsu’s reign as department chairman, she felt that the alumni association was indispensable for its historical meaning and functions. However, the alumni association couldn’t form a legal person at that time, so the temporary “Alumni Club for NTNU Music Department” was founded. On November 12nd, 1991, the founding ceremony for the club was held in NTNU auditorium. At the ceremony, Chang-Hui Hsu was nominated president, the guidelines for the club set, work team expanded, and branches founded. Since then, many gatherings and activities were arranged, and the name list of the alumni club was published, utilizing the connections among alumni.

On April 25th, 2010, under the petition of 127 alumni in Taiwan, “Alumni Association of Department of Music, National Taiwan Normal University” was officially founded. 20 board members were elected, and Ming-Hui Lin was elected president. November 2011, the association was authorized to rename as “Alumni Association as a Legal Person, Department of Music, NTNU”.

The aim of the association is to encourage academic discussions, build interpersonal bonds, research pedagogic methods and enhance the development of NTNU. The ultimate goal of the association is to increase interaction among alumni, boost information exchanges, promote academic researches, and sculpt music culture in Taiwan. This website is a platform to strengthen the connections of alumni, and the routine gatherings and activities are held for the alumni to interact and exchange information.
